Mariano Vincenzo Giacchi
Mariano Giacchi graduated in Biological Sciences in 1972 at Siena University. Here he carried out teaching and research activities from 1977, first as a CNR grant holder and then as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine. His scientific interest focused in particular on the themes related to Epidemiology and Health Promotion. In 1983 he was Research Scholar at Bridgeport University and Yale New Haven University. In 1997 he was Visiting Professor at IMRE University of Budapest. He collaborated in the activities of the WHO Networks "Healthy Cities" “Health Promoting Hospitals”, and the international study “Health Behaviour in School-aged Children”.
Mariano founded and directed the Interdepartmental Centre for Research in Education and Health Promotion (CREPS) at the University of Siena, which has allowed him to build up research activities in the development of population surveillance systems, with particular attention to lifestyle in childhood and adolescence. These studies helped define and evaluate the actions that can prevent obesity and promote healthy lifestyles. In particular, under the "Gaining Health" programme of the Italian Ministry of Health, Mariano has contributed to the development of: ”Okkio alla Salute” programme, the national and regional (Tuscany) HBSC study, and the "… And go with fruit" project.
He contributed to the organisation of numerous national and international courses on the strategies, tools and ways to promote health. Mariano is a member of various scientific societies and has published numerous scientific articles. Since 2016 he is co-coordinator of the Campus "Health for All and Sustainable Development" at the eco-village of Panta Rei, and is one of the founding members of the Association for Social Promotion “EXPLORE”.
